CRAFTSMANSHIP
MACHINING:
SCULPTING FROM SOLID MATERIAL
Die machining for Pièces Souvenir is a manufacturing technique that involves
sculpting directly into solid material using cutting tools.
In practice, technicians input a digital program into a machine.
This coding allows a tool equipped with cutting edges
to move through space to create complex shapes on a workpiece.
This operation is carried out using machine tools,
also known as “CNC machining centers” (Computer Numerical Control).
We operate numerous 4-axis and 5-axis machining centers.
The machining of a piece is carried out in three stages:
PHASE ONE
ENVISIONING THE COIN
At Pièces Souvenir, we use high-quality base metals.
Our teams are highly specialized in the machining of these materials.
This technique utilizes a spindle that moves through space to machine the surface of the material with extreme accuracy.
However, before handling the piece, our machinists rely on a digital file, which is either provided by the client or created by our in-house digital modelers.
This stage is essential for determining the paths that define the coin’s surfaces and its final 3D volume.
Next, we generate the toolpaths, which allow us to select the precise parameters required for shaping the piece.
This involves determining the appropriate machinery, the depth of material removal, the specific tools to be used, as well as the feed rate and cutting speed.
The goal of this meticulous process is to analyze every detail, ensuring the final piece matches the client’s expectations as closely as possible.
MASTERY IN EVERY DETAIL
MANAGING SPEED AND SPACE
Next, the machinists operate the machine using specialized computer software.
This is a complex operation as our teams work on what can be described as “micromachining”.
This requires the use of microscopic tools, demanding great rigor and close attention.
Depending on the intricacy of the work, they must also adapt and regulate the feed rates and spindle rotation.
In fact, the smaller the cutting tools, the faster the spindle must rotate.
It is important to note that this control software undergoes frequent updates and occasionally requires additional maintenance.
This is why our team members receive regular training, ensuring they operate under the best possible working conditions with the most up-to-date expertise.
